Our Reconstruction: An Immersive Theatre Project

Easily the most dramatic episode in American history was the sudden move to free four million black slaves in an effort to stop a great civil war, to end forty years of bitter controversy, and to appease the moral sense of civilization.

-W.E.B Dubois, Black Reconstruction in America

What Can We Learn by Reconstructing the Past?

Our Reconstruction is an interactive, community-devised theatre project that explores what might have become of our nation had the Reconstruction era succeeded. Who might we be as a nation if given time to repair the harms of this nation’s original sin of slavery?

Through adaptations of historical texts, devised scenes created in collaboration with students, historians, and communities, the project harnesses the collective imagination to travel across generations with one Black family from Reconstruction to the present.

Join the Project

This interactive theatre experience is currently in its first iteration. We invite high schools, colleges, and community organizations to host workshops where students can participate in adapting and devising scenes of the work.
